Treatments available at the Practice

We are a Droitwich dentist whose main aim is to help to maintain your own healthy teeth in your own healthy gums for as long as possible, preferably for life!

We prioritise health over cosmetic dentistry and are, perhaps, a little old fashioned in this way. That’s why we list ‘gum treatment’ ahead of the more high tech, glamorous and costly restorative dentistry such as crowns. After all, the chief cause of tooth loss in adults is gum disease and it is very common. Healthy gums are the healthy foundations upon which we can build the more complex work, but only if we can be confident that it will last.

Examinations (check ups) include a check on your teeth and gums, the condition of existing restorations such as fillings, and we look at the soft tissues of the mouth. We will also take x-rays if appropriate and undertake an oral cancer screening.

Gum disease may not be serious if it is identified and treated in the early stages, but it needs work by yourself at home as well as by us to maintain healthy gums. For more advanced problems there are various different treatments and after thorough examination your treatment options will be discussed with you. Alison, Carol and Bianca, the hygienists, are closely involved in this work.

Preventive scaling and polishing is important to remove calculus (tartar) from your teeth on a regular basis. If this is not done plaque will build up and can eventually lead to gum disease. We can also advise you on good oral hygiene products and techniques. We vary the frequency of these visits according to your needs, wishes and the health of your gums.

Children’s Dentistry: We offer a full assessment of your child's oral health so we can help you to look after your child's teeth and prevent dental disease. We believe dentistry should be a positive experience for all the family and we place great emphasis on making visits to the dentist relaxed, friendly and fun. We invite you to join us to work together to give the whole family something to smile about.

Fillings are provided as a way of preventing the advance of tooth decay.

Modern white fillings are a combination of a resin and nano-particles of ceramic. They are best used in small and medium size cavities – for larger holes other techniques may be more appropriate.

For some fillings in the back teeth we still recommend silver ‘amalgam’ fillings. This material is very strong and durable as well as being quick and simple to use. We only use amalgam fillings after a full explanation.

Root fillings are required for teeth with advanced decay, or with infection as a result of trauma. This is a complex procedure which has earned something of a bad reputation. However, it is no more uncomfortable than any other treatment – it just takes longer. Teeth which have been root filled are often protected with crowns afterwards.

Crowns are generally used to restore severely broken teeth to offer greater strength than possible with a large filling. They are very versatile and can also be used to align crowding, close gaps or improve colour.

The creation of a crown requires two appointments. At the first visit the tooth is prepared, impressions are taken and a temporary crown is made, whilst at the second visit the crown is tried, adjusted if necessary and finally it is cemented into position.

To replace missing teeth there are several options:

Dentures are removable by yourself. They can be worn to replace lost or missing teeth to enable you to enjoy a healthy diet and smile with confidence. A complete or full denture is one that replaces all of the natural teeth in either the upper or lower jaw. A partial denture fills in the spaces created by lost or missing teeth and is sometimes attached to your natural teeth with metal clasps.

A dental bridge is a false tooth held in place usually by crowns attached onto the teeth on each side of the gap. This procedure is used to replace one or more missing teeth and various designs are possible. Bridges are fixed in position and cannot be removed from the mouth, unlike dentures.

Dental Implants are the next best thing to natural teeth and can be used to replace a single lost tooth or many missing teeth. They last longer and provide greater structural support than either bridges or dentures, though they do need to be looked after carefully. Dental Implants can also replace dentures or they can be used to secure unstable dentures. Sanjiv Joshi has an MSc in implantology and provides complete implant care at the Practice.

Tooth whitening is becoming a very popular way to brighten your smile. It is simple, non-invasive and highly effective, and it allows each individual to have complete control over how white to go! We generally use the ‘nightguard vital whitening’ technique in which we make you a thin flexible tray to hold a mild bleaching gel in contact with your teeth for a prolonged period, usually overnight. The effect is maximised by repeating the application over a two to three week period and can be topped up as necessary thereafter.

Orthodontic Treatment is available on referral. We have many contacts and can discuss the most appropriate place to send you or your child. Other specialist services are also available on referral for more complex implant, gum or root canal work.
